Best way to give gifts IMO is to listen for the person to mention something they want, when they dont intend to be asking for it, then next time you’re at the store get it and surprise them. Gifts aren’t gifts if they are expected. That’s called a debt.

Haven’t seen him since, oh… young naive love….
I once got a I.O.U…. twice. He was like “That shows some effort! I was gonna buy you something but valentines is so overated” while he gave his friends that are girls, chocolates and sweethearts.
